Position Summary
As a Generator Commissioning Technical Field Advisor, you'll play a critical role in bringing large-scale power generation facilities online safely and efficiently. Working under the direction of the Commissioning Lead or Senior Engineer, you'll travel to power generation sites across the U.S. and internationally to commission, test, troubleshoot, and optimize large-frame generators and their auxiliary systems. From startup through commercial operation, you'll perform complex electrical testing, inspect critical equipment, support system integration, and train plant operators while ensuring every project meets the highest standards for safety, quality, and performance. This role is ideal for a technically driven professional who enjoys solving complex engineering challenges, working in dynamic field environments, and making a direct impact on critical infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities
Follow all Copower and site-specific safety policies, procedures, and electrical safety requirements at all times.
Travel up to 90% of the year to domestic and international project sites.
Commission large-frame gas and steam turbine generators and associated auxiliary systems under the direction of the Commissioning Lead or Senior Engineer.
Perform startup, operation, troubleshooting, and performance verification of generator systems.
Read, interpret, and apply process flow diagrams, electrical schematics, control logic, and functional drawings throughout the commissioning process.
Inspect generators and auxiliary equipment to verify proper installation, operation, and system readiness.
Perform and interpret electrical testing, including Hipot, Megger, DLRO, VLF, and Power Factor testing.
Support the commissioning and flushing of critical mechanical systems, including lube oil, seal oil, and hydrogen cooling systems.
Assist with commissioning excitation systems, Static Frequency Converters (SFC), generator protection systems, and associated controls.
Perform testing and verification of generator protection relays and related electrical equipment.
Coordinate installation verification and functional testing of assigned systems.
Identify, document, and communicate system deficiencies or non-conformance issues while collaborating with engineering teams to implement corrective actions.
Complete commissioning reports, turnover documentation, test certificates, and as-built drawings with a high degree of accuracy.
Provide operator training and technical guidance prior to commercial plant operation.
Support continuous improvement initiatives and complete required technical skills development under the guidance of senior commissioning personnel.
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree in Engineering preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and directly related power generation commissioning experience.
1+ years minimum experience commissioning, troubleshooting, or maintaining large-frame generators within power generation facilities.
Technical Expertise
Strong knowledge of large-frame generators and associated systems, including transformers, ISO Phase Bus, GSU transformers, seal oil systems, hydrogen cooling systems, excitation systems, and generator protection.
Experience working safely around medium- and high-voltage electrical equipment.
Working knowledge of NFPA 70E and industry electrical standards, including NEC, NETA, IEEE, and NESC.
Experience with electrical testing procedures and troubleshooting techniques.
Knowledge of generator mechanical systems, instrumentation, controls, and excitation equipment.
Understanding of combined cycle power plant operations and generator commissioning principles.
Professional Skills
Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities with the ability to diagnose complex electrical and mechanical issues.
Ability to interpret engineering drawings, electrical schematics, control logic, and technical documentation.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate technical findings to engineering teams and project stakeholders.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to accurately complete commissioning documentation and turnover packages.
Ability to work independently in remote field environments while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary project teams.
Additional Requirements
Ability to travel up to 90% of the year for domestic and international assignments.
English proficiency required; Spanish, Portuguese, or Japanese language skills are a plus.
Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and in varying weather conditions.
Ability to regularly stand, walk, climb ladders, and lift up to 25 pounds, with occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
