Position Summary

We are looking for a certified and attentive Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) Chamber Tender/Operator to assist with the safe operation of hyperbaric chambers, ensure patient well-being during treatments, and maintain equipment and facility standards.

The Tender/Operator plays a crucial role in delivering effective HBOT treatments while ensuring compliance with safety protocols and fostering patient comfort. This role requires the Tender/Operator to physically enter, or dive, inside the chamber with the patient when required by protocol.

Firefighters, paramedics, and EMS professionals: Your training is a great match for this role. This position is especially well-suited to individuals with a background in fire rescue, paramedicine, or EMS. Experience working in confined spaces, following emergency protocols, and making calm decisions under pressure translates directly to this position.

Key Responsibilities

Chamber Operations

• Prepare and operate hyperbaric chambers according to prescribed treatment protocols.

• Assist with chamber pressurization and depressurization while adhering to all safety guidelines.

• Monitor and document pressure, oxygen levels, and other chamber settings during treatments.

• Dive inside the chamber to accompany and monitor patients during treatment, as required by protocol.

• Prepare patient treatment bags, including laundered scrubs, blankets, and hood or neck dams.

• Launder scrubs and ensure clean supplies are available for patient use.

Patient Care and Monitoring

• Conduct pre-treatment checks, including patient preparation and review of medical history.

• Obtain patient vital signs before and after treatment and report abnormalities to the provider.

• Explain treatment procedures, safety protocols, and what patients should expect during therapy.

• Monitor patients for signs of discomfort or adverse reactions and respond appropriately.

• Assist patients with safely entering and exiting the chamber.

Safety and Compliance

• Maintain compliance with applicable regulatory standards, including those established by the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology (NBDHMT).

• Conduct daily inspections and routine maintenance of chambers and associated equipment.

• Follow infection-control and sanitation procedures to maintain a clean and safe environment.

• Act promptly and effectively during emergencies, including decompression illness or other incidents.

Administrative and Record-Keeping

• Maintain accurate treatment, equipment-maintenance, and safety-check logs.

• Collaborate with medical staff to ensure patient-care documentation is completed properly.

• Manage the inventory of supplies, including oxygen tanks and sanitization materials.

Professional Development

• Stay informed about industry advancements and changes in hyperbaric therapy protocols.

• Participate in training sessions and obtain certifications as required by the clinic.

Qualifications

Required

• High school diploma or GED

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification

• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow safety procedures closely

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with patients

• Technical ability to operate and troubleshoot hyperbaric equipment

• Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions under pressure

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds

• Ability to enter the hyperbaric chamber, fit through the chamber entry port, and tolerate pressurized, confined conditions for the full treatment session

• Ability to pass a medical fitness-to-dive evaluation before hire and periodically thereafter, in accordance with clinic policy

• No medical conditions that would be contraindicated by increased atmospheric pressure, as determined through the fitness-to-dive evaluation

• Comfortable working in a confined environment for extended periods

Preferred (but not a requirement)

• Advanced degree in a healthcare-related field

• Certified Hyperbaric Technician (CHT) certification or equivalent

• Previous experience in hyperbaric medicine, diving, or a related field

• Background in fire/rescue, paramedicine, EMS, or military diving

• Familiarity with operating and maintaining hyperbaric chambers
